Opened in April 1995, Blizzard Beach was built because
of the continued popularity of the two other water
parks – Typhoon Lagoon and River Country. The
concept behind Blizzard Beach deals with a fictional
freak snowstorm. As the snow melted around Florida's
first ski lodge, designers saw an alligator sliding
down the slopes. This gave them the idea of turning
the ski jumps and slopes into water rides. Only Disney
would create a seaside playground with an Alpine
theme.
The oxymoronic theme of a ski-themed water park
is carried out in the names of rides and other areas
and with unusual props. Names like Runoff Rapids,
Mt. Gushmore, and Steamboat Springs add to the quirky
and playful atmosphere. Blizzard Beach's main attraction
is the Summit Plummet, the world's tallest and fastest
free-fall slide. There are 18 other water-based attractions
including toboggan runs, flumes and slides. Well
worth a visit when planning your first trip to Orlando.
